Sea Harvest

Sea Harvest:

Collecting seafood is one of the many reasons people come to the Oregon Coast. Some of the freshest, best-tasting seafood in the world is found in close proximity to the Harborview.

Let’s start off with breakfast at Irish’s Mooring Café, right across the street from the Harborview. Whether it’s fresh pastries & coffee or a delicious home-made breakfast burritos, they are a great way to begin your day.

Then we’re ready to go get some shellfish. We sell the licenses right here in the office. Whether you choose crabbing or clamming will depend on the tides. If we’re having a low tide in the morning, you’ll be off to collect some cockles from the Bay bottom just off the Harborview property.

If we’re having a morning high tide, your time will be best spent going after the wily Dungeness Crab off one of two

piers within walking distance of the motel & RV Park.

Either way, stop by the office and we can get you set up for your morning harvest. There you’ll find everything you’ll need: crab rings, bait, clam rakes, buckets, crab gauges, AND detailed step-by-step instructions, if you need them.

If you’d like, you can cook & eat your catch for lunch. Doesn’t take long to have a pile of steaming seafood in front of you either in our Clubhouse or at a picnic table out at our Crab Shack.

If you choose to save your shellfish for later, let’s head over to the Garibaldi Pub for lunch. Excellent clam chowder along with the best burgers in town, and, of course, the nicest people who ever ran a bar are what you’ll find there.

After lunch, we’ll head South on Hwy 101 into Tillamook. If you need a fishing license, you can stop off at Fred Meyer’s and pick one up at the customer service desk.  At the light at 3rd St. you’ll see a sign directing you to Cape Meares. Take a right there, go 1.7 miles and take another right on Bayocean Road. Just before you hit the ocean, you’ll find Cape Meares Lake, right after the turnoff for Bayocean Spit. There’s parking on the right and you can pick your favorite spot along the bank from which to cast your line.

If you need tackle, bait, or anything else for catching rainbow trout, stop in Tillamook at Tillamook Sporting Goods, on your left across from the Fred Meyer store. Tell them you’re headed for Cape Meares Lake to catch some rainbows and you’ll get exactly what you need, and probably a few pointers as well.

I recommend a slip sinker rig or bobber and a few #12 treble dough hooks along with some rainbow sparkle Power Bait. The trout LOVE this stuff! Whether you choose to dangle the bait from a bobber or float it up from the bottom, leave about 14-18” of leader after the bobber or sinker. Try a couple of different colors and see what works best.

Don’t forget to take a cooler to stock all your fresh rainbow trout in! Because next we’re off to a fantastic dinner AND a fabulous view.

From  (1) Cape Meares Lake, turn around and head back on Bayocean Rd to Hwy 131. Turn right and just follow the road as it takes you around the mountain through Netarts to Oceanside. Toward the North end of town on the left you’ll find (2) Roseanna’s Café, a wonderful little restaurant that looks out from a small bluff over the Pacific Ocean.

Really great seafood, steaks, sandwiches and you have GOT to try the warm marionberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream! After dinner, head back out of town South along the Coast. You’ll wind your way through Netarts following the signs for Tillamook and eventually wind up back on 3rd St. headed into Tillamook. Turn left on Pacific, two blocks later turn left on 1st and then you’re back on Hwy 101 North. 10 miles later you’re back at the Harborview safe & sound.
